The council bought 17 acres of farmland on the eastern edge of the village in 1996. The purchase led to a £400,000 sport and leisure facility for the local populaton of 3,000 people.
Encouraged by the Sports Council, Colden Common Parish Council applied for a Lottery grant and, at the end of 1997, was awarded over £260,000 towards a pavilion and bowls green. A further £26,000 grant, for terracing and fencing of the bowls green, was made. Construction of the red brick building with pantile roof began in 1998, and was finished in six months.
Colden Common Park would not have been possible without considerable voluntary effort. The parish council is also grateful for donations from Hampshire Playing Fields Association, the Foundation for Sport and the Arts, Finch's Trust, Winchester City Council, Hampshire County Council, the Civic Trust and the Forestry Commission, as well as many other individuals and organisations.
